The BJP-ruled Gujarat government on Friday presented a 3.01 lakh crore budget which imposed no new taxes.Finance Minister Kanubhai Desai presented the gujarat budget for 2023-24 in the Assembly here on the second day of the Budget Session.This was the first budget of the new Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government headed by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel which took office in December last year after the saffron party won a landslide victory in the Assembly polls.

Gujarat 2023 Budget LIVE Updates: The Budget 2023-24 proposes a slew of schemes and projects, some of which were part of the promises made by the BJP in its manifesto before the 2022 elections, like doubling the insurance coverage under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya-MA (PMJAY-MA) scheme to Rs 10 lakh from Rs 5 lakh and providing two gas cylinders free per year to the beneficiaries of Ujjwala scheme.

Kanubhai Desai said the budget outlay of 3,01,021.61 crore for 2023-24 indicates a "significant increase" of 57,077 crore, or 23.38 per cent, in comparison to the previous fiscal. Of the total outlay of 3.01 lakh crore, 1.91 lakh crore has been allocated for "development expenditure" while 1.04 lakh crore will be spent as "non-developmental expenditure".

The Budget 2023-24 proposed a slew of schemes and projects, some of which were part of promises made by the BJP in its poll manifesto like doubling the insurance coverage under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya-MA (PMJAY-MA) scheme to 10 lakh from 5 lakh, and providing two gas cylinders free per year to the beneficiaries of the Ujjwala scheme.

Kanubhai  Desai said that taking into consideration the revenue account with capital account and net public account, the estimates for the financial year 2023-24 show a surplus of 916.87 crore.

"In this 'Amrit Kaal', I present a budget which will determine the direction of the development of the state for the next 25 years. For the year 2023-24, I propose a budgetary outlay of 3,01,021.61 crore," he said. The government aims to increase the state's Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) to more than 42 lakh crore in the next five years, he said.

No new taxes are being proposed in the budget, he said.

Desai said that the state would also focus on development of ports and water bodies. Rs 1415 crore has been allocated for building the Bhadbhut reservoir on the Narmada river and Rs 150 crore for developing the Sabarmati riverfront near GIFT City. The Budget also earmarked Rs 640 crore for developing new fishing ports in Gujarat and the strengthening existing centres. Rs 76 crore has also been provided for developmental measures in the GIFT City.

On the education front, Desai annouced that new medical colleges will be established in Aravali, Chotta Udepur, Mahisagar and Dang districts. Apart from these, five new nursing colleges will also be set up. The Gujarat government has also earmarked a sum of Rs 75 crore to provide bicycles to 2 lakh students from the scheduled and developing castes.


The Gujarat government on Friday presented a Rs 3.01 lakh crore Budget for the 2023-24 fiscal, a 23 per cent rise in budgetary provisions when compared to last year. Announcing the Budget, Finance Minister Kanu Desai said that the state would spend Rs 5 lakh crore over the next five years for development of infrastructural facilities.

Besides this, Rs 905 crore was also allocated for metro projects in Ahmedabad and Surat. A provision of Rs 200 crore to cover equity contribution for the Ahmedabad-Mumbai bullet train project was also announced in the state budget today. Rs 100 crore was also sanctioned for construction of iconic bridges in various municipal corporations, the Finance Minister stated.
