How to Check if my PAN Card is Linked with Aadhaar Card or not ?
To check PAN-Aadhaar link status, follow the steps mentioned below:
Step 1: Visit the e-Filing Income Tax Department page i.e. https://eportal.incometax.gov.in/iec/foservices/#/pre-login/link-aadhaar-status
Step 2. Enter your PAN Number

Checking the PAN-Aadhaar link status is very simple and can be done in two-three steps. We have listed out the procedure for checking whether you PAN and Aadhaar number are linked or not.

  • User need to go to the official Income Tax website which is https://www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/
  • Once you open this, an option “Link Aadhaar” will appear on the left side of the Home page.
  • Upon clicking the option, a page to link both PAN and Aadhaar will appear. It also has an option to check the current status.
  • Selecting the option of current status will take you to a different page where one has to fill in the details of PAN and Aadhar.
  • After this, a notification will appear that will tell you about the status of linking.

How to Link Aadhaar with PAN by sending an SMS
In order to link your Aadhaar to PAN, follow these steps:
You have to type a message in the format
UIDPAN<12 aadhaar="" digit=""> <10 digit="" pan="">
Send the message in the above-mentioned format to either 567678 or 56161 from your registered mobile number
For example, if your Aadhaar number is 987654321012 and your PAN is ABCDE1234F, you have to type UIDPAN 987654321012 ABCDE1234F and send the message to either 567678 or 56161
It is to note that the government has mandated linking of PAN and Aadhaar card by March 31, 2021. According to the notification, if a person fails to link these two, his or her PAN will become inoperative.

Importance of Linking PAN Card with Aadhar Card
Linking PAN with Aadhar is very important for all PAN cardholders because of the following reasons:
  • All PAN cards that are not linked with Aadhaar will be deactivated after March 31st, 2020
  • Linking PAN with Aadhaar will help in tackling the problem of multiple PAN cards issued in the same name
  • Your income tax return form would not be processed if your PAN is not linked with Aadhaar
  • The user will get a summarised detail of taxes levied on him for future reference
If you still have not linked, you can simply go to the website mentioned above and fill in the details for linking. Another step for linking PAN and Aadhaar is by sending a message to 567678 or 56161. Via messaging, make sure you send it in this format- UIDPAN12digit Aadhaar>10digitPAN>.

Also, if anyone fails to link Aadhaar and PAN, the user might have to pay a penalty of Rs 10,000 as well because when it is inoperative, it will be assumed as not furnished or not quoted. Therefore it will not comply with the laws and a person may be liable to pay the amount under Section 272B of the Income Tax Act.

Q. I don’t have Aadhaar. Can I still e-file my tax return?
A. Yes, you can file tax returns but it will not be processed until your Aadhaar is linked with PAN. In case you have enrolment number, you can link it with PAN and your e-return would be processed this year but you will have to link your PAN with Aadhaar at a later stage.

Q. Is there any other process to link the two?
A. Right now, there are only two processes. The user has to get his documents linked by any one of the processes.

Q. Do NRIs need Aadhaar card to e-file?
A. NRIs are exempt from quoting their Aadhaar while filing their income tax e-returns.

Q. Who will be required to link PAN and Aadhaar numbers? What if my income is below taxable limits?
A. Even if the taxable income of an individual is below the taxable limits, he has to link his PAN with Aadhaar. Otherwise, it will be deactivated.

Q. Why do I get failed authentication message when I try to link Aadhaar with PAN?

A. You have to enter the correct OTP sent to your registered mobile number. In case you enter wrong OTP, you will get the failed authentication message. It is best suggested to enter the OTP diligently on the website to authenticate your request.
