Social science is a major category of academic disciplines, concerned with society and the relationships among individuals within a society. Social science as a whole has many branches, each of which is considered a social science. The social sciences include, but are not limited to: anthropology, archaeology, communication studies, economics, history, human geography, jurisprudence, linguistics, political science, psychology, public health, and sociology. The term is also sometimes used to refer specifically to the field of sociology, the original "science of society", established in the 19th century. The social sciences are often seen as easy, probably because they deal with issues and processes that surround us all the time, and on which we have ideas and positions. They are about people—our wealth, our problems and our values. Yet, this apparent simplicity is deceptive. Teaching the complexities of human beings is not easy. The recently developed social science textbooks of the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) are perhaps the most ambitious effort of its kind in India. They seek to address the challenges faced by social science education in India.
Social sciences in Indian schools are in an unenviable position. On the one hand, they are expected to shoulder the bulk of the normative expectations from schooling. Thus they are supposed to teach everything—from a commitment to keeping the streets clean to the internalization of a pluralist vision of the nation. Yet, on the other hand, they are treated as stepsisters of science. Science is seen as a solid grounding for a lucrative career, while social sciences are considered soft, trivial and for the weak. It puts the social sciences at the centre of a struggle over the purpose and meaning of schooling—is schooling only about getting a job or is it for becoming a better person?

Indian educationists have always had a wide vision of the purpose of education. Most policy documents have emphasized a cultural role for the social sciences, over and above the mundaneness of vocational knowledge. Social sciences are, after all, the most practical, dealing with affairs that everybody participates in, and best learnt by doing rather than reading. There is a consensus about the fact that the decline of the social sciences can only spell danger for the quality of public life in our country.
