The state education department has allowed universities to conduct college exams in July in the pen-and-paper mode for final semester undergraduate and postgraduate students.In a notification issued on Monday, the department said that with the number of Covid-19 cases going down significantly in the past few days, the colleges could hold the exams in the offline mode in July. The final decision has been left to the universities.

Most universities in the state have decided to conduct exams in the online mode from the first week of July. Many students haven't opted for the online mode, hence universities are to conduct exams for them in the offline format.In May, the Gujarat government had cancelled all the 2021 university exams for undergraduate courses except for final-year students. The decision to cancel the exams was taken due to the Covid-19 surge in the country. The cancellation, however, did not cover medical and paramedical courses.

The government had said that the other students would be promoted on merit-based progression without examinations.CM Vijay Rupani had announced that merit-based progression would be given to over 9.5 lakh students of second, fourth, and sixth intermediate semesters in Gujarat universities, except for those in medical and paramedical programmes.

The state government has cancelled school exams, including for Class 10 and Class 12 board students this year due to the pandemic. The government has come out with a formula for tabulating marks for the evaluation of Class 10 and Class 12 students.
