Cyclone Tej Live Updates :  A cyclonic storm brewing in the southwestern Arabian Sea is expected to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm in next 24 hours i.e on Sunday, with a trajectory set for the southern coasts of Oman and adjacent Yemen, according to the India Meteorological Department's announcement on Saturday. The cyclone 'Tej' was named by India and it was officially included in the roster of storm names sanctioned by the WMO/ESCAP panel in April 2020.

The storm is brewing in the Arabian Sea at 1850 km southwest of Karachi, ARY News reported. Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said a low-pressure area in the Arabian Sea has developed into a depression and lies at a distance of 1850 km southwest of Karachi, Pakistan.

Cyclone Tej Updates: VSCS (very severe cyclonic storm) Tej lay centered at 2330 IST of October 21 (Saturday) over SW Arabian Sea about 330 km ESE of Socotra (Yemen), 690 km SSE of Salalah (Oman), and 720 km SE of Al Ghaidah (Yemen), said the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday. The cyclone is very likely to intensify further into an extremely severe cyclonic storm in the forenoon of October 22, it added. Meanwhile, the cyclonic storm will not have any impact on Gujarat. A low-pressure area over the southeast and southwest Arabian Sea has developed into a depression and is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm by October 21 morning, the IMD had said in a statement earlier. According to the formula followed for naming cyclones in the Indian Ocean Region, it will be called 'Tej'. It is predicted to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm on Sunday and move towards the south coasts of Oman and adjoining Yemen, according to the IMD. Cyclones, however, change their course sometimes. 

In a post on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), IMD said, “VSCS Tej over WC & SW AS intensified to ESCS moved NW at 0830 hrs IST of 22 Oct about 160 km E-SE of Socotra (Yemen), 540 km S-SE of Salalah (Oman) & 550 km SE of Al Ghaidah (Yemen). Likely to move NW and cross coasts between Al Ghaidah & Salalah around noon of 24 Oct as a VSCS.”

What Is Cyclone Tej?
The cyclone will be named Tej according to a formula followed for naming cyclones in the Indian Ocean Region and will be the second cyclonic storm in the Arabian Sea this year.

According to IMD, the cyclonic storm is predicted to further intensify into a severe cyclonic storm on Sunday and move toward the south coasts of Oman and adjoining Yemen and not Mumbai.

However, meteorologists have also said that at times, storms may deviate from the predicted track and intensity, as seen in the case of cyclone Biparjoy, which formed in the Arabian Sea in June and initially moved in a north-northwest direction before changing course to make landfall between Mandvi in Gujarat and Karachi in Pakistan.

Private forecasting agency Skymet Weather said that a majority of models indicate the storm is heading for the Yemen-Oman coast. However, the Global Forecast System models suggest a re-curvature while positioned over the deep central parts of the Arabian Sea, steering it towards Pakistan and the Gujarat coast.
